An Artistic Life

Spring is finally coming to New York City, although the only way to know for sure is by the bunches of daffodils outside the corner bodegas. I grabbed some for Louise (87) as I stopped by for a visit, we are both fully vaccinated and celebrated our first mask-less meeting.

Louise told me she was feeling "irrelevant" today—not visible to the busy families with whom she shares her Upper West Side apartment building. I agreed I could understand the way she feels as she now enjoys a slower pace of life, having successfully raised and launched three accomplished daughters. We reminisced about her childhood memories: growing up in a family of professional musicians, life on her Bronx block, High School at Music and Art, employment as a registrar at many New York City art museums, a long and loving marriage, and her love of ballet. We enjoyed the daffodils together. "Irrelevant", I don't think so! Just in transition, just like so many of us as we navigate a new and different reality together.
